Do you have a weight loss dream? What is your weight loss dream? What is weight loss going to do for you? Think about these questions.
Let us look at weight loss. Why do we want weight loss? A myriad of reasons come to mind but the one that covers the majority of dieters is the desire to be fit and healthy. The pursuit of weight loss is effort to achieve our ideal shape and size. (Sometimes are reasons may be misguided and manifest in an eating disorder .That is a separate issue).
Why wait a moment longer to have your dreams of weight loss fulfilled! You have the motivation!
Many people have spent a great proportion of their lives battling against weight. Their whole life is circumnavigated by the desire for weight loss. The illusive weight loss is constantly on their minds. Many diets have been tried to bring about weight loss. Some people recognise themselves as yo-yo dieters. They have had success, albeit temporary, with the weight-loss diets they have followed with determination. Weight loss whilst on the diet can be spectacular in some cases. However, so many find the weight loss is short-lived. As soon as normal eating is reintroduced, the weight-loss becomes historic as the weight begins to pile on. In desperation, the dieting is begun again. Perhaps the same diet or another one promising miracles!
Many of these diets are based on a near-starvation regime. On these severe diets, weight loss is achieved and the weight loss can be spectacular. However, in the majority of cases, the weight loss is short-lived.
There are many worrying aspects to these methods of achieving weight loss. Firstly, apart from a cursory mention that it is advisable to seek medical advise before going on a weight-loss diet, these diets do not take into account any medical conditions that might be contributing to the weight problem. Some weight-loss diets can aggravate medical conditions. Secondly, the amazing survival mechanism of the body is being conveniently ignored. Near-starvation diets can activate a slowing of the metabolism when the body registers that it is receiving insufficient food for its daily needs. It is as if the body goes into a feast-famine mode. In brief, when a person is in the severe-diet phase, the metabolism slows down so that the body can survive on less food. The body has now learned to survive on less food. Once the survival mechanism has been triggered it continues to do its job, that is, helping you to survive with little food. The body has responded in a very smart way to lack of food. The triggered response of slowed metabolism does not end there. What happens when food becomes available again? The body is delighted of course. However, because the it has learned that there is a possibility that food might be in short supply again, the slowed metabolism continues its good work in ensuring the body can survive on minimal food. It now starts to store food in anticipation of another period of starvation. A vicious circle is being created and the very disturbing aspect of this viscous circle is that it is all brought about by self-imposed starvation and not by the conditions of nature. A mechanism which is extremely useful in situations where food availability is not always guaranteed is being activated in a situation where food is always available. For people living in parts of the world where food is always available this survival mechanism rarely has a place and for yo-yo dieters it is quite problematic! A wonderful survival mechanism becomes what appears as an insurmountable obstacle in our weight-loss campaign.
